Last week saw me kick a ball in two real sessions - the full 50 minutes of the Suffolk FA’s Monday Night Football League match, albeit playing for Playford’s opposition because they were short! Then again at a training session on Thursday.
The experiences made me realise how little football I have actually played in the last six months. The last time I completed 90 minutes was back in December for the First Team against The Feathers. By the end of January I was out for six weeks with a wrist injury and when I returned I managed just four appearances, the longest of which, my first, was 70 minutes again versus The Feathers and included a goal.
The two sessions showed that I can still chase around with the best of them, the stamina is still there, but match fitness, touch, speed of thought and positioning, all seems to have deserted me for the moment. In the Monday night game I couldn’t move the ball where I wanted or at times even manage some simple control. At training I felt like I never got out of first gear, which might have been alright if I was 26 or 27 and playing three times a week because it wouldn’t matter when it came to real games, but I’m 35 and barely getting above walking speed for exercise outside of football.
should easily hit 400 appearances with little trouble this season but if I want to keep going and push for 450 I will need to be more practiced during the close season. Indeed if I want to make a valuable contribution and not just be there to make up the numbers I have a lot of work still to do starting with another session tonight.
